Japanese martyrs

188 Japanese martyrs were canonized in Nagasaki at the end of November. We wanted so much to be there, but couldn't get it worked out.

Fr. Finigan has their story at his blog here. It's inspiring.

That sounded really neat! I have gotten really interested in the history of Catholicism in Japan, in part because of Taryn and in part because it falls within my time period (and I had a Jesuit in my dissertation, even!).

I'm reading Shusaku Endo's Silence right now. Very appropriate. A very interesting book. Endo is like the Graham Greene of Japan.
